The Johns Hopkins University (Johns Hopkins, Hopkins, or JHU) is a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1876, Johns Hopkins is the oldest research university in the United States and in the western hemisphere. It consistently ranks among the most prestigious universities in the United States and the world. For more than 140 years, our faculty and students have worked side by side in pursuit of discoveries that improve lives.

At JHU, water purification was made possible, the field of genetic engineering was launched, and authenticated the Dead Sea Scrolls. Saccharine, CPR, and the Supersonic ramjet engine were invented at JHU.
